GUWAHATI: The fourth meeting of the State Government-AASU (All Assam Students' Union) sub-committee has reached a consensus that the implementation of each clause of the Assam Accord needs a specific timeframe.

The purpose of the sub-committee is to prepare a framework to implement each clause of the Assam Accord. The committee, with Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora as the Chairman, has two other ministers and five members from the AASU members. The sub-committee held its fourth meeting today.

Talking to the media after the meeting, AASU adviser-in-chief Samujjal Bhattacharjya said, "The meeting reached a consensus that implementation of each of the clauses of the Assam Accord needs a specific timeframe. Implementation of every clause of the Accord is a must. The meeting had a detailed discussion on clause VI of the Accord, mainly the recommendations of the high-power committee led by Justice (retired) Biplab Kumar Sharma as the Chairman. The high-power committee submitted its report during the last BJP government in the state. Implementation of Clause VI of the Assam Accord will only keep the dominance of the indigenous people intact. This clause seeks constitutional safeguards for the indigenous people of Assam. We told the government to implement the recommendations of the high-power committee. However, the government told us that the recommendations of the high-power committee needed more discussion. We agreed to that. We will hold detailed discussions on the recommendations in the meetings to follow. We told the government side to hold such meetings frequently."

Minister Atul Bora said, "The AASU expressed its opinion on the implementation of the Assam Accord. From the government side, we gave our opinion. However, Clause VI needs more discussion. We will inform the Chief Minister of the outcome of today's discussion. We will try to hold sub-committee meetings more frequently. The State Government has goodwill to implement the Assam Accord. That is why the Chief Minister formed this sub-committee."

Education Minister Ranuj Pegu also attended the meeting.
