Guwahati: The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has received a proposal for the construction of a greenfield airport in Karbi Anglong district in Assam.
This was revealed by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol while replying to an unstarred question by Member of Parliament Upendra Kushwara on the floor of the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
In his reply, the minister said, "The Government of India has given in-principle approval for the construction of 21 new Greenfield Airports so far. Out of these, 12 Greenfield Airports have been operationalised. State-wise list of 9 Airports yet to be operationalised. Apart from the above, proposals for construction of Greenfield Airports at Kota (Rajasthan), Kottayam (Kerala), Parandur (Tamil Nadu), Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), Raichur (Karnataka), Hirachera, Kailashahar (Tripura), Doloo Greenfield Airport, Cachar (Assam), Karbi Anglong (Assam), Rajgir (Bihar), Puri (Odisha), and Brownfield Airports at Raxaul (Bihar), New Civil Enclave at Bihta (Bihar), and Purnea (Bihar) have been received."
Union Minister Mohol further stated that the central government launched the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) - UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) in October 2016 to enhance regional air connectivity from unserved and underserved airports in the country to make air travel affordable to the masses. 619 routes connecting 88 aerodromes (including 13 heliports and 2 water aerodromes) have been operationalised under the RCS-UDAN scheme till January 31, 2025.
It should be mentioned here that a Greenfield airport is an airport built on previously undeveloped land and is planned and constructed from scratch. The term "Greenfield" comes from the construction industry, where it describes a project that starts on an empty field.
