Assam Police resistance minimizes cattle smuggling, says DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta

GUWAHATI: Smugglers have opted to the Meghalaya route to push smuggled cattle to Bangladesh following stiff resistance they face from the Assam Police.

Talking to the media here today, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, "Cattle smugglers used the Mankachar, Dhubri and the Karimganj sectors along the India-Bangladesh border to smuggle cattle to the neighbouring country. However, following the stiff resistance put forth by the Assam Police in all these three sectors, the smugglers have brought changes in their modus operandi. They now use the Meghalaya sector of the India-Bangladesh border to smuggle cattle. Cattle smuggling in the Assam sector is quite minimal now. Cattle smuggling is a big business involving thousands of crores of rupees. We have adequate information that a portion of these funds goes to antinational elements."

Police sources said that cattle smuggling worth Rs 800 crore took place in Assam in the past ten months. Five people from Uttar Pradesh were running this business. While two of the five died in an ambush in Assam, three others are absconding. The sources said that the syndicate did collect cattle from different states, including Assam and Mizoram, for their supply to Bangladesh through Assam.
