GUWAHATI: The Higher Secondary (HS) first-year examinations, 2025, have gone awry with the leakage of question papers. The situation has come to such a pass that the beleaguered Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) Division II (formerly AHSEC) had to cancel all the remaining HS first-year examinations scheduled from March 24 to March 29, 2025.

Taking immediate action, the board has asked the inspectors of schools of twelve districts to lodge FIRs against 15 private institutions and three government/provincialised institutions for not following the SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) regarding the opening of sealed packets of the mathematics question paper, the examination of which was scheduled on March 21.

With the outcome of the ongoing police investigation remaining pending, the affiliation/permission of the 15 private institutions has been suspended with immediate effect. According to the board, during the suspension period, the institutions shall not take admission of students in Class XI for the academic session 2025-26. However, students studying in Class XI and appearing in the HS 1st year examination 2025 will continue their studies in the suspended institutions.

The board has also directed the inspectors of schools and lead college principals to enquire into the leakage of the economics question paper on March 22 even as the examination went on as scheduled.

In the case of the three erring government/provincialized institutions, the board requested the education department to initiate penal action against the institutions.

According to the board, it has received all the sealed packets/cartons of the HS first-year mathematics question paper as sought on March 20, 2025, by 5 pm. The mathematics examination was on March 21. The board, however, found that 15 private institutes and three government/provincialised institutions from 12 districts had broken the seal of the packets of the mathematics question paper before the scheduled date and time of the examination. The board said that this is a clear violation of the standard procedure, and the leakage of question papers for the remaining subjects in the examination cannot be ruled out.

The board will meet on March 24 to take further course of action regarding the holding of the stalled examinations.

The 15 private institutions are Azad Anchalik Jatiya Vidyalay, Palhazi in the Barpeta district; Bajali Academy of Excellence Sr Sec. School, Pathsala in the Bajali district; Edith Douglas HS School and Presidency Sr Sec. School in the Cachar district; NCD Sr Sec. School, Suvidya REM HS School, and Paschim Jonai Sr Sec. School in the Dhemaji district; Hailakandi Science Sr Sec. School in the Hailakandi district; Dr Bhabendra Nath Saikia Sr Sec. School in the Kamrup Metro district; Bongalmara Academy Sr Sec. School and SAS International Model School in the Nagaon district and Ambitious Sr. Sec. School in the Nalbari district.

The three government/provincialised institutions involved are Lakhiganj HS School in the Dhubri district, Arya Vidyapith HS School in the Kamrup (M) district, and Rangia Girls' HS School in the Kamrup district.
