ITANAGAR: An Assam Rifles jawan died while another injured when a group of militants ambushed the team in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh Sunday morning, said a senior Police official from the district.

The Assam Rifles team was coming in a water tanker after fetching water and was on the way to its camp when the vehicle was ambushed by a joint group of ultras near Tengmo Village under Jairampur sub-division of the district at around 9 am, informed Changlang Superintendent of Police (SP) Mihin Gambo, adding that ULFA and NSCN (K) were suspected to be involved in the ambush.

The exchange of fire lasted for about half an hour, Gambo said and added that the deceased Assam Rifles Havildar has been identified as Birendra Singh Yadav. The injured had been immediately shifted to hospital, the police officer said. However, the casualty on the ultras' side was not known.

The Assam Rifles, district police and the CRPF have launched a massive joint search operation in the area, added the SP.
