Guwahati: Tea in Indian auctions in the first four months of 2025 fetched higher prices than those in the preceding year. The average prices of tea registered a hike of Rs 24 per kg. Significantly, the prices fetched by tea from the North India zone were higher than those in the South India zone in tea auctions. Assam Tea and tea from other Northeast states are included in the North India zone.

From January to April 2025, Indian tea fetched an average price of Rs 160.49 per kg, as compared to Rs 136.41 garnered during the first four months of 2024, according to a report issued by the Tea Board of India. This translates into a hike of Rs 24 per kg of tea sold in tea auctions.

Tea from the North India zone sold for an average price of Rs 223.04 per kg in the month of April, 2025, which was the highest price in the four months under consideration. However, tea from the South India zone fetched the highest price of Rs 141.15 during the month of January 2025.

During the entire year of 2024, the highest price for Indian tea at auctions was fetched in the month of September, with tea selling for Rs 229.99 per kg. Also, in the year of 2024 as a whole, the average price garnered by Indian tea was Rs 198.76 per kg.

It is generally seen that tea prices record an upward trend during the period from May-June to October-November every year.
