Haflong: The alleged molestation of a tribal girl by Haflong traders has caused tension in the hill town for the past few days. It is noted that two traders from a particular community of Barak Valley tried to molest a local youth who had come to do business in Haflong. The victim has filed a case against Abdus Sadiq and Ahad Uddin at Haflong Police Station.
This year's November 1 and November 24 occurrences included a highly educated young woman from a low-income neighbourhood who supports her family by operating a second-hand clothing store and enrolling in APSC coaching.
On November 1, she went to Abdus Sadiq’s second-hand cloth shop in Haflong Bazar. Sadiq took her to his warehouse to show her clothes but sexually assaulted her, taking advantage of the isolated warehouse. After returning from there, she decided not to go to Sadiq’s shop again.
On November 24, she went to another businessman, Ahad Uddin’s shop, and faced a similar situation there. The next day, on November 25, she filed a case against Sadiq and Ahad at the Haflong police station.
However, the victim said that the police cooperated with her. A case number 90/2024 has been registered at the Haflong police station. Ironically, as soon as the case was registered, the victim was pressurized to withdraw the police case and settle the matter through negotiations. It is learnt that the culprits are now absconding and hiding somewhere.
Meanwhile, the victim sought the intervention of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council CEM Debolal Gorlosa for justice. The victim also urged the young women who were subjected to such sexual assault in this way to raise their voices, and if they keep their mouths shut, Ahad and Sadiq will get more emboldened, and more and more girls may fall prey to such heinous crimes against women.
