BJP gearing up to contest Assembly poll in minority-dominated constituencies
Staff Reporter
Guwahati: After winning the minority-dominated constituency of Samaguri in the recent bye-poll, the BJP is gearing up to battle it out in some minority-dominated constituencies in the Assembly election slated for 2026.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said, "We do not indulge in appeasement politics. We want development for all. We have given hospitals and ambulances in places where they are needed, without looking at who resides in that area. Even during eviction drives, we don't give importance to the community of the people residing there. Eviction drives have been conducted in Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) areas as well as in Silsako. For us, all encroachers are the same; we do not differentiate between people."
The CM also said, "In the last Lok Sabha election, we managed to get 30,000 to 40,000 votes in 100% minority areas also. Earlier this was not the case. The reason for this change is that the benefits of schemes are being provided to people from majority as well as minority communities. We have not done politics on development. The Rs 10,000 benefit to women's self-help groups under Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan will also benefit around 7 lakh women from the minority community. The number of beneficiaries is similar in both majority and minority areas."
The Chief Minister further stated, "We have not sought votes aggressively in minority areas. If we do so, we will get lots of votes. So now, in view of the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026, we have already started activities to contest the poll in around six minority-dominated areas."
State BJP sources said that Samaguri has become a turning point for the party, as they never imagined that the saffron party would bag a seat in a minority constituency. They feel that people in the minority areas are fed up with the politics indulged in by the Congress and AIUDF, and they now want a change. Their mindset towards the BJP has undergone a change as they have seen that people in their areas are also getting government jobs and benefits under all government schemes equally as those in majority areas, the sources added.
