GUWAHATI: Dispur will conduct an audit of all apartments and high-rises in the city to ensure their safety during natural disasters like earthquake. The development is the result of frequent tremors after the major earthquake on April 28, 2021, which jolted the State.

"There are reports that many apartments and high-rises have developed cracks in the April 28 earthquake. Considering mushrooming of apartments in a highly earthquake vulnerable city like Guwahati it is high time the State Government hired reputed firms and renowned institutions to conduct technical and safety audit of these buildings. The audit will find out whether the city's apartments and high-rises can withstand a major earthquake," a source in Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authorities (GMDA) said.

A seismologist working with the North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat said the government has to regulate mushrooming of high-rises by strictly enforcing a law to compel builders to adhere to building safety norms.

"I am quite sure that many apartments and high-rises have been constructed in Guwahati without adhering to safety norms. Corrective measures must be taken immediately so that these buildings do not pose threat to human lives during a natural disaster like an earthquake," the seismologist who does not want to be quoted on the ground of official protocols of NEIST, said.
