Five hardcore ULFA (I) cadres apprehended with arms and ammunition at Charaideo district

GUWAHATI: Five hardcore ULFA (I) cadres including senior members of the proscribed ourfit were apprehended and a huge amount of arms and ammunition recovered during a joint operation of the Police and Army at Charaideo district on Wednesday afternoon.

The operation was launched following a tipoff to the Police that five suspicious persons were holed up in the house of Bhuvan Gogoi of Tairai village in the Satianaguri area under Sapekhati Police Station, stated a Assam Police press release.

The team of Charaideo district Police and Army unit of Sapekhati COB of 244 Fd Rgt cordoned off the village late in the evening. The apprehended ULFA (I) cadres have been identitifed as Self Styled Sgt Maj Apurba Gogoi alias Arohan Asom; Self Styled Sgt Maj Simanta Gogoi alias Maina; Self Styled Sgt Maj Biraj Asom alias Yogen Gogoi; Self Styled Pvt Lakshyajit Gogoi alias Dhrubo Asom; and Self Styled Pvt Sidhartha Gogoi alias Chinmoy Asom.

The Police release said that Apurba Gogoi and Simanta Gogoi are two “most wanted cadres of ULFA (I). Simanta Gogoi is a known IED expert. Both have been wanted in many cases including extortion in Sivasagar and Charaideo since 2012. They were involved in the firing indent at the Kanubari Tea Factory and Sapekhati Petrol Pump; kidnapping of Timon Habi Tea Estate Manager and a bomb blast incident at the Teok Ghat area under Sonari Police Station.”

On Thursday morning, the police recovered three MQ 81 Assault Rifles, eight magazines of MQ 81; 323 ammunition of MQ 81; one 7.65 mm pistol (Russian made) with magazine; two numbers of 7.65 mm ammunition; one 0.22 mm (Factory made) with magazine; two numbers of 0.22 ammunition; approximately 2 kg gelatine-like explosive material; seven pieces (3 metres) of Cordex; and 16 detonators. Among other miscelaneous items recovered were ULFA (I) uniforms and medicines, the release added.
