GUWAHATI: The jihadi modules active in Assam and a racket making fake passports in the state have worried the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Former state MLA Shiladitya Dev submitted a memorandum addressed to Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla yesterday. The former MLA met Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and gave him detailed accounts of the happenings in the state, especially the fake passport racket active in the state.
According to sources, the MHA took the matter of jihadi modules active in Assam seriously. The Centre is also monitoring jihadi activities in other states in the Northeast.
The Foreign Secretary said that the MEA took the fake passport racket in Assam seriously. The former MLA placed evidence before the Foreign Secretary as to how Bangladeshis get Indian voter cards, Aadhaar cards and make passports.
In his memorandum submitted to the two Union Ministries, the former MLA said, "Al-Queda and sleeper cells have started to raise their ugly heads in Assam. The involvement of Bangladeshi jihadis is a proven fact after the recent arrest in Barpeta. The busting of a passport racket at Hojai has proved that fundamentalist groups have started to gain a foothold in the state."
The police grilled a madrassa principal in connection with jihadi activities. "The activities of more madrassa teachers, especially of sar areas, are on our lens," a police source said. On the passport racket in Hojai, police sources said that the thrust is to unearth 'how Bangladeshis get Aadhaar cards, voter cards etc., to make passports in India'.
The police claimed to have got vital clues to delve deep into their modus operandi of the racket. More arrests are on the cards, the sources said.
