Guwahati: Following the Supreme Court's order to transfer the National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Prateek Hajela to Madhya Pradesh for maximum period permissible, the Assam government Saturday appointed Hitesh Dev Sarma as the new NRC state coordinator.

As per media reports, Hajela has been released for Inter Cadre deputation.

The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SA Bobde and RF Nariman.

The decision came in the backdrop of two cases registered against the former NRC coordinator by Assam Police following complaints of wrongful exclusions in the citizens’ list published on August 31.

It may be mentioned that Prateek Hajela is a native of Madhya Pradesh Hajela of the 1995-IAS batch officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre with B.Tech in Electronics from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Before the NRC posting, he had held the position of Mission Director, National Rural Health Mission; Commissioner and Secretary, Health and Family Welfare.
