Public Outcry Prompts Immediate Government Response
New Delhi – A Delhi restaurant has come under intense fire after a couple was allegedly denied entry for wearing Indian attire, sparking widespread outrage on social media and prompting swift action from the Delhi government.
A video of the couple detailing their experience has since gone viral. In the clip, they allege that while others in Western wear were allowed in, they were stopped and spoken to disrespectfully. The man recording the video can be heard demanding that such establishments be shut down for enforcing discriminatory policies.
CM Orders Probe, Restaurant Offers Symbolic Apology
As the video gained traction online, Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra responded, calling the incident “unacceptable in Delhi”. He confirmed that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had been informed and had taken serious note of the matter. “Officials have been directed to investigate the incident and take immediate action,” Mishra posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Shortly after, Mr Mishra shared an update: “The operators of this Pitampura restaurant have accepted that they will no longer impose any restrictions based on attire and will welcome citizens coming in Indian attire.”
In a gesture of goodwill, the restaurant reportedly agreed to offer special discounts on Rakshabandhan to women wearing Indian outfits—a move seen as a symbolic apology amid growing public pressure.
Cultural Identity and Discrimination Concerns Rise
The incident has ignited a wider conversation on cultural bias and discrimination in urban establishments. Many online users questioned how Indian attire could be deemed inappropriate in the capital of India itself, while others called for greater cultural sensitivity from businesses.
