Democratizing Pakistan:Prime Minister Imran Khan Lifts Censorship of State-run Media

Sentinel Digital Desk

Guwahati: In what seems like an attempt to "democratize" Pakistan, the main agenda of the recently held Pakistan Elections, the newly elected Prime Minister Imran Khan has lifted the censorship of state-run media outlets Pakistan Television (PTV) and Radio Pakistan.

Pakistan's Information Minister Fawad Hussain Chaudhry announced that the Imran Khan-led PTI government has lifted all censorship that existed on the state-run media houses.

The Information Minister took to Twitter and announced that the state media houses will now have editorial independence on the content they produce.

The withdrawal of censorship of state-run media consolidates the attempts of the PTI government to usher in an era of freedom of expression and democracy in the country that has been haunted by insurgency for long.

The move by the newly elected PM Imran Khan is being hailed across the country, with many finding it hard to believe that the government has acted upon the issue with such promptness, few days after the announcement and Imran taking oath as the PM to be precise.

Before Khan's PTI, the PML(N) too had played the media censorship card, but it was never implemented.

The state-run PTV has seven centers across the country in Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Muzzafarabad, and Multan.

The PTV was set up in 1964 at Lahore.
