The Northern Railway has received its first aerodynamically designed passenger electric locomotive on Tuesday which is capable of running at 200 kmph.

Guwahati: As reported by a senior rail official, "The first aerodynamically designed three-phase WAP-5 passenger electric locomotive built by the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works has been introduced in service in Northern Railway today."

The best thing about the new locomotive is that it comes with improved aerodynamics and has an ergonomic design. Notably, this new design is meant for the driver's comfort and safety.

Premium trains like Rajdhani Express, Gatiman Express, and Shatabdi Express are to get the new locomotive which would further slash the travel time for these trains and make travelling even faster and smoother.

The official further adds, "The new locomotive front design has a more aerodynamic shape to reduce drag at higher speeds. And the revamped suspension system would ensure that there are no undue vibrations due to air drag and the train is dynamically stable even at speeds of 200 kmph. Cameras with microphones have been installed at the critical positions inside and outside the locomotive to record the voice and audio signals for post-event analysis with data storing facilities.”

The locomotive is to have a WAP-5 variant, with 5,400 HP of power and is energy efficient and stable for high-speed operations.
