Garage Owner acting as Middleman for Police officer caught red handed while accepting bribe of Rs 15,000 in Baihata Chariali

Guwahati: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anticorruption Assam on Friday afternoon at around 5.50 pm caught accused Niranjan Bhuyan (41) son of Late Phonidhar Kakati, a garage owner of village Khudrapalaha, P.O. & P.S. Baihata Chariali, Dist-Kamrup red-handed while accepting a bribe amount of Rs. 15,000/- from complainant Md. Bipul Ahmed a truck driver of the same village.

The bribe money has been seized from the possession of the accused garage owner.

The operation was led by the Assam, ACB team led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Role of Officer-in-Charge of Baihata PS investigated

As per police statement, the accused had demanded a bribe of Rs. 50,000/- from the complainant in the name of influencing the Officer-In-Charge, Baihata Chariali Police Station SI Pankaj Das. Today the complainant was to pay the 1st installment (Rs. 15,000/-) out of the total bribe amount.

Thus, the complainant had approached the ACB PS in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, Guwahati and a trap was laid down as per standard procedure in the matter of ACB PS Case No. 08/2019 Dated 07/06/2019 U/S 7-A of the PC Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018).

The role of the Police Officer in charge of Baihata Police Station is also being investigated.

It may be mentioned that the accused Niranjan Bhuyan was trying to act as a middleman and had threatened the complainant that he has to pay the amount to save complainant from arrest in the case at Baihata PS of a vehicle theft in which the complainant was being falsely implicated, as per the version of the complainant.

The accused has been arrested and will be forwarded to the Chief Judicial Magistrate tomorrow morning. Due procedure is observed.
