Guwahati: The Meghalaya continued to remain severely affected by the ongoing unrest on Saturday, with a shutdown following three days of protests disrupting normal life across the state.

The situation has affected the availability of essential commodities, with reports indicating a shortage of petrol, diesel and cooking gas. Hotels and homestays have also witnessed widespread cancellations as tourists and visitors reconsider their travel plans amid the prevailing tension.

The transport sector has been particularly affected, with taxis and auto-rickshaws reportedly operating with few or no passengers. Major commercial areas, including Police Bazaar, have witnessed a sharp decline in activity, while popular tourist destinations such as Cherrapunji have also remained largely deserted.

The unrest has further affected connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya. The Jorabat route has been disrupted, while the alternative route through Rani has also reportedly been blocked, leaving travellers facing difficulties in entering or exiting Meghalaya.

The developments have raised concerns among local businesses and tourism stakeholders, who fear prolonged disruptions could have a significant impact on the state’s economy and tourism sector.
