Guwahati: Normal vehicular movement between Assam and Meghalaya, as well as within Meghalaya, has been restored following days of tension and road blockades, Assam Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora said on Sunday.
In a social media post, Bora said Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar conveyed the development to him after the Meghalaya government held discussions with organisations involved in the protests.
Bora thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his “prompt and decisive intervention” and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for his constructive approach towards resolving the situation.
He also expressed appreciation to organisations and stakeholders in both states for responding positively to appeals for peace, withdrawing road blockades and helping restore normalcy.
Vehicular movement had been disrupted following violence in Shillong earlier this week, after which protests and restrictions affected vehicles travelling between Assam and Meghalaya.
Bora said the restoration of movement was a positive step and emphasised the longstanding relationship between the two states.
“Assam and Meghalaya are not merely neighbours; we are sister States, connected by deep-rooted cultural, economic and people-to-people ties,” he said.
He called for continued cooperation between the two states and urged all stakeholders to ensure that peace, harmony and brotherhood prevail in the region.
