Agartala: Floodwaters have entered several low-lying parts of Agartala after the Haora River rose sharply following heavy rain in Tripura’s hill areas, affecting more than 1,000 people.
The flooding began late Saturday night, with parts of Sadar and Jirania subdivisions in West Tripura among the worst hit. Areas including Baldakhal, Chandrapur, Srilanka Basti, Aralia and Indranagar have reported inundation, while water has also entered residential properties near the Haora River and Katakhal Canal.
With several families stranded or facing the threat of rising water, the administration has launched evacuation operations. Four boats have been deployed, while police, Tripura State Rifles and personnel from other departments are assisting residents in moving to safer locations.
Six relief camps have been opened to accommodate people displaced by the flooding. The Agartala Municipal Corporation and district administration are also coordinating the distribution of essential supplies and other relief measures.
West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar said the sudden rise in the Haora River was triggered by heavy rainfall in the hills. Although there was no significant rainfall in the affected areas on Sunday, authorities continued rescue operations as a precaution.
Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed officials to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the situation and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to protect residents in vulnerable areas.
The Department of Water Resources said the Haora River was flowing at around 10.90 metres, above its critical level. Officials have cautioned that additional rainfall in the hill areas could lead to a further rise in the river and worsen flooding in parts of Agartala.
No casualties have been reported so far. Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions issued by the authorities.
