All Assam Rongmei Naga Students’ Union writes to Prateek Hajela

Silchar: All Assam Rongmei Naga Students’ Union (AARNSU) has urged upon the state coordinator of NRC Prateek Hajela to take necessary and lawful steps towards the inclusion of Rongmei Naga (indigenous tribe) of Assam in NRC.

Members of the union through a representation submitted to Prateek Hajela through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar mentioned that they are facing difficulty and harassment. Rongmei Naga, as stated in the representation, are indigenous tribe living in the heart of Barak Valley.

They are already burdened with problems of unemployment. The non inclusion of a large number of Rongmei Nagas in the 2nd and final draft NRC list which was published on July 30 has made life miserable for them.

Last year also Rongmei Nagas had submitted a similar memorandum to NRC state coordinator who assured them that steps would be taken to include their names. But it was not done, as a result of which, many Rongmei Nagas did not find their names in the list. They have alleged that officials of NRC Seva Kendras treat them as aliens or Bangladeshis despite knowing the fact that according to the Constitution of India Rongmei Naga is an indigenous tribe.

A copy of the memorandum signed by Dinesh Rongmei, general secretary, and Maichingkhong Rongmei, president, of the Union, has been sent to NSK-33, NSK-57, NSK-23 and NSK-63.
