Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre's Great Leap Forward

Silchar: Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre past its silver jubilee year has taken a great leap forward by eking out a place of distinction among all other institutions of its kind with its updated medical services to the patients, mostly drawn from economically poor families, at the most affordable cost. It is this humanitarian and philanthropical approach which has earned it plaudits from the society. The transparency and accountability maintained by the management has opened before it wide vista of opportunities. Funds received from various sources are utilized cautiously and judiciously for infrastructure development and further development.

Quite significantly, following affiliation conferred by Srimanta Sanardeva University of Health Sciences and approved by the government of Assam and also Indian Nursing Council, an oncology nursing school named Dr S Krishnamurthy Centre for Research and Education in Cancer has started functioning in the campus from October 4, 2018. The school provides post basic diploma in oncology nursing. It is also gratifying that the government of Assam has given nod for opening M.Ch (Surgical Oncology) and College of Oncology and post basic diploma course in oncology nursing courses affiliated to Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences. This includes critical care nursing and operation room in nursing. The next move is for opening College of Oncology.

Sharing further information, Dr Ravi Kanan, director of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, said out of 5 institutions in the country, CCHRC has been selected for conducting fellowship in oral oncology. Dr Kapil Malik has been undergoing 2 years’ fellowship in oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery here as sponsored by the Association of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeons of India. Hectic move is also on to have nuclear medicine facility that will make the treatment of cancer more updated.

At the call of the Society, Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister and ex MP (RS) sanctioned Rs 50 lakh from his MPLAD which has been utilized for construction of the first floor of the Cobalt unit and OPD building. Construction of the first floor of the staff quarter is on with fund of Rs 25 lakh received from Rajdeep Goala MLA of Lakhipur. Building for housing blood bank is ready with the financial aid of Rs 17.5 lakh extended of LIC of India which awaits mandatory inspection by the Centre and the state team of experts. With the installation of oxygen generator, oxygen has been connected through pipeline to ICU, HDU and operation theatre. The dedicated medical and paramedical staff assisted by a retinue of helping hands provide the best of services to the patients who flock this centre of cancer treatment from far and near places of Barak Valley and beyond.
