Silchar: A body of an unidentified youth was recovered under mysterious circumstances at Najirpatty point of Silchar town in the wee hours today.
A section of local people suspected that the youth died due to drug overdose. They also alleged the CCTV cameras at Silchar town are not working properly for the last few months.
Speaking to the media, locals blamed the administration and Cachar police for being negligent in apprehending the drug peddlers who are allegedly involved in drugs smuggling in the region. There has been a constant rise in drug smuggling activities, however, the concerned department and police failed to take necessary actions to check the menace, claimed the local people.
"The boy might have died due to drug overdose. We recovered the body today in the morning hours and accordingly informed the police," said one of the pedestrians.
A group of pedestrian also urged the administration to check the social menace in the region by installing better CCTV cameras in the heart of the Silchar Town.
Another pedestrian claimed that all the CCTVs in Silchar Town have become functionless, thus, there has been a constant rise in drug smuggling activities in the region.
Moreover, they stated the youths Below Poverty Line (BPL) are also involved in such activities.
Furthermore, they also urged Silchar MLA, Deputy Commissioner, various Municipal Ward Commissioners along with other concern authorities to increase better surveillance in the region to stop drug peddlers from entering inside the territory of the Silchar town.
"They must launch an awareness campaign against drugs peddling and how it is affecting the youth of our society. A drastic step should be taken in all the nooks and corners of the region, " said another local people.
