DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh Police arrested three individuals on Tuesday and seized 20 kilograms of beef, including 15 kilograms of raw meat and 5 kilograms of cooked meat, as part of a significant operation against the sale of prohibited meat.
Following a targeted raid based on specific intelligence inputs, the arrests were made. The seized meat was recovered from multiple locations where it was being sold and distributed illegally.
Speaking on the ongoing crackdown, Dibrugarh’s in-charge Superintendent of Police, Shantanu Dutta, confirmed the arrests and emphasised that such operations will continue with strict vigilance. “We are committed to ensuring that the sale of prohibited items is curbed in the district. Necessary legal action has been initiated against the accused,” Dutta said.
The police have registered a case under relevant sections, and further investigation is underway to identify potential links to larger distribution networks. Authorities have urged the public to cooperate and report any such illegal activities to maintain social harmony and uphold the law.
The crackdown was triggered by reports of beef being sold or stored near sensitive religious areas. This caused public outrage and prompted swift action from law enforcement.
Assam has strict regulations on beef sales, especially near religious sites. The state government prohibits beef trade within a 5-kilometre radius of temples, namghars, and satras to maintain communal harmony.
