GUWAHATI: More than 6,000 applications have been registered under the Guwahati water supply project, assisted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The water supply project receiving the connection will be operational by the end of 2024.

Online applications are being received through an app, GJB, available on the Play Store for Android devices. All the registered applications will get connections between 20 and 25 days after their registration.

Under JICA, there are two water supply projects: the South Central Guwahati Water Supply Project and the North Guwahati Water Supply Project.

The problems afflicting the two water supply projects are: (i) most people are unaware of where to apply for the connection; (ii) the connection fee is too expensive for middle-class consumers; and (iii) they are not sure if they will have to pay an extra amount for pipes and tanks.

According to Guwahati Jal Board sources, for this project, at present, 14 DMAs (district metering areas) are commissioned, and 4,500 households have received connections till now.

There are a total of 8 reservoirs in this project. There is one main reservoir, and the rest are service reservoirs. The main reservoir is for intake and water treatment processes for the South Central Guwahati Water Supply Project in Kharghuli Ramsa Hills. The entire project will have 126 DMAs.
