GUWAHATI: Differences of opinion and resentment is prevailing in the AGP following the recent statement of former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta expressing his dissatisfaction over the role of party leadership in dealing with the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

Mahanta was the founder president of the AGP.

A section of AGP leaders have strongly favoured taking disciplinary action against Mahanta since he was critical about the role of party leadership on the CAB before the media instead of raising the same at the party platform.

These leaders are also offended with Mahanta as the latter was not very enthusiastic and critical about the launch of a students’ wing of the AGP. They said the party’s constitution was amended to launch the students’ wing. “So it was a party decision. It was not an individual decision,” a senior leader said.

On other hand, some leaders are apprehensive that Mahanta might become aggressive if he is given a show-cause notice. They said it is better to adopt a wait and watch policy.

Meanwhile, State Food & Civil Supply minister Phani Bhusan Choundhury on Monday said the AGP leadership will soon discuss with the Centre and express its views on the CAB.

Even though the AGP had opposed the CAB before the Lok Sabha polls in April this year, majority of its leaders and workers want to continue the party’s tie-up with the ruling BJP till the next assembly elections.
