GUWAHATI: The All Guwahati Students' Union (AGSU) on Saturday held demonstrations across the city to decry the State Government's failure to provide sufficient potable water to residents of the city and demand that steps be taken on a war footing to resolve this problem.
In accordance with AGSU's appeal, a sizeable number of students and prominent citizens, including women, assembled at various places in the city to stage their protest. The protest venues included the area near the Swahid Udyan at Chandmari, the area near the Gopal Bodo HS School at Ganeshguri, the area near the Sonaram High School playground at Bharalumukh and the area near the SB Deorah College at Ulubari.
Four organizations under the AGSU - East Guwahati Students' Union, South Guwahati Students' Union, West Guwahati Students' Union and Central Guwahati Students' Union - led the demonstration programme.
In a statement, AGSU president Anowar Hussain and general secretary Nayan Jyoti Nath said that the Government has failed to accomplish the task of collecting water from the adjacent river Brahmaputra, purifying it and then distributing it to the public. Therefore, instead of taking about commissioning mega water supply projects in the city, the State Government has to clarify a time-frame for commencement of regular water supply in the city.
