All Women Police Station Celebrates 25th Anniversary

GUWAHATI: Commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the All Women Police Station (AWPS), Panbazar celebrated its 25th Anniversary on Tuesday at its premises. Established on 2nd Oct 1993, the only women police station in Assam and the Northeast started its functioning with a minimal staff of one woman sub-inspector as the officer-in-charge, one woman assistant sub-inspector and eight woman constables. The All Women PS was established with a view to address the women from Guwahati and its surrounding areas.

In a release, the officers of the AWPS said that the number of cases registered has increased considerably as the women have started coming out and report a crime being done on them without hesitating or without any fear.

“The woman officers and staff in the PS have been playing a pivotal role in making the women victims comfortable. Most of them come for help for domestic violence, dowry. Also, a great number of POCSO cases are reported these days. After the Commissionerate came into existence, the All Women PS has a Woman Inspector as the OC, 2 WSIs, 12 WPCs and 6 WHGs. The ACP (Women Unit) supervises the cases of the PS as well as important women related cases of other PSs as and when directed by the Commissioner. The All Women PS officers are also a member of Anti-human trafficking unit of the Commissionerate,” the release said. The 25th anniversary was graced by Commissioner Pradip Saloi and other senior officers of the Commissionerate, the release added.
