GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has alleged that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has adopted an arm-twisting measure by downgrading his Z+ NSG security cover to CRPF Z+ security because of his anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) stance.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mahanta said, “The Chief Minister who holds the Home portfolio in the State and the AGP leaders who met Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently are also involved in this conspiracy. An insurgent group is also behind this move. One of the aims of the AGP leaders meeting Shah was hatching such a conspiracy.”

Mahanta further said, “I’m not going to change my stance on the CAA even if the government deprives me of all facilities that are meant for a former Chief Minister, let alone withdrawal of Z+ NSG security cover.”

On the slew of decisions taken by the State Cabinet on Saturday, Mahanta said, “These are all luring politics, not politics for the wellbeing of the people of the State.”

On the decision taken by the State Cabinet on the Assamese language, Mahanta said, “The Assam Official Language Act, 1960 has given Assamese the official language status of the State. The decision taken by the State Cabinet on the Assamese language is indeed confusing.”
