Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh BJP has strongly condemned Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy’s remarks in Parliament, describing Assam as the “Land of Lahe Lahe.” The party accused the Congress and its allies of consistently disrespecting Assam and its people, demanding an apology for the statement.

While talking to media, BJP spokesperson Pankaj Borbora asserted that the Congress and its allied parties have a history of undermining Assam’s dignity since independence. He alleged that they have repeatedly encouraged anti-Assam forces and ignored the state’s contributions.

The controversy erupted after Saugata Roy’s statement in Parliament, which the BJP claims was an attempt to insult Assam’s rich cultural heritage. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal strongly opposed the remark, stating that it reflects the “Congress-led INDI alliance’s tradition of disrespecting Assam and the Northeast.”

The BJP also took a dig at the Trinamool Congress, criticizing the governance of West Bengal and accusing its leaders of failing to understand Assam’s peaceful and harmonious way of life. “Roy’s remark shows his ignorance. Assam is a land of courage, culture, and strength, and such comments are unacceptable,” the BJP’s statement read.

The party further alleged that Congress MPs from Assam remained silent on the issue, failing to defend the state’s honour. They also recalled a previous instance when Karnataka’s Congress Minister Priyank Kharge made comments about the semiconductor project in Jagiroad, claiming the Congress had remained indifferent then as well. The Assam BJP has demanded an official apology from Saugata Roy and the Trinamool Congress for the remark, asserting that the people of Assam will not tolerate any insult to their identity.
