PALASBARI: A grave situation has emerged along National Highway 17 due to heavy floodwaters flowing in from Meghalaya. The surging water has caused the Kalahi river in Chhaygaon to swell dangerously, threatening to submerge the vital bridge that connects major parts of western Assam.
The water level has risen rapidly, reaching a critical point beneath the bridge. Authorities fear that if the bridge collapses under pressure, it will sever crucial connectivity between Guwahati and the vast regions of South Kamrup and Goalpara.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the heavy downpour led to severe soil erosion near the bridge. As a result, a huge pit has formed dangerously close to the edge of the highway, posing a potential threat to vehicles plying through the area. Local residents and commuters are in a state of panic, as the bridge serves as a lifeline for transportation, emergency services, and trade. Emergency teams have been alerted, and precautionary measures are being considered. However, the situation remains tense, with water levels continuing to rise.
Officials are urging travellers to avoid the area and are exploring alternative routes should the bridge become impassable.
