GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Friday accused the state government of failing to provide timely relief to flood-affected people, demanded a White Paper on flood losses and called for a high-level inquiry into alleged illegal mining across the state.
Addressing the media, former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora alleged that the government had failed to provide adequate relief during the initial days of the floods and questioned the utilisation of funds collected under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He demanded that the government publish a White Paper detailing the extent of flood damage, including affected villages, houses, crop losses, casualties and the overall financial impact. Bora also called for a committee of experts to recommend permanent solutions to Assam’s recurring flood and erosion problems.
Former Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia alleged that the government had failed to implement the Gauhati High Court’s directions on illegal mining and river protection. He demanded a high-level investigation into ongoing illegal mining activities and claimed unscientific mining had worsened the flood situation.
The Congress leaders also alleged irregularities in flood relief distribution and accused the government of politicising relief efforts.
Meanwhile, an APCC delegation led by Bora and Saikia distributed relief materials to flood-affected families at Bali Mising Gaon under Ramani Gaon Panchayat and the Tekelachuk area of Simoluguri Town. The party said it would continue relief distribution in affected areas.
