Guwahati: Hundreds of retired employees of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) are facing severe financial hardship, with pensions remaining unpaid for the past five months.

According to a press release issued by the GMC Pensioners’ Forum, the disbursement of pensions has been irregular since July 2024, with payments reportedly made only once every four to five months. The situation worsened in March 2025, after which no pension has been released at all.

The forum highlighted the emotional and financial strain the prolonged delay has placed on elderly pensioners and their families. Despite repeated representations to the concerned minister, the GMC commissioner, and the mayor, no concrete steps have been taken to resolve the crisis.

Forum president Hemanta Saikia and general secretary Mathura Deka have now appealed to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to step in and direct GMC authorities to ensure timely and regular payment of pensions.
