GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) aims to establish 120 vending zones across the city to organize street vendors and promote urban development. However, this announcement comes as vendors face eviction drives, leaving many without alternatives. Recently, over 50 vendors were evicted from Khao Galli at Dighalipukuri to facilitate flyover construction. Affected vendors struggle to sustain their families as they await rehabilitation.
GMC officials have proposed 60 vending zones per ward, with 83 zones already approved. Uniform-sized carts are also planned to ensure consistency.
While some vendors are cautiously optimistic, others remain sceptical about the timeline for implementing these plans. The creation of vending zones is crucial for balancing vendors’ right to earn a living with the city’s need for organized urban spaces.
