Guwahati: Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging the latter for an immediate review and strengthening of security measures along the Assam-Bangladesh border.
In his letter, Saikia highlighted the recurring “pushback” operations being carried out by the Assam Police since May 2025, which have led to the deportation of over 300 undocumented Bangladeshi nationals. He pointed out that despite the presence of the Border Security Force (BSF) across the 267.5 km border stretch, infiltration remains a serious challenge.
Saikia noted that operations conducted on May 23, May 31, June 8, June 27, July 6, and August 3 underline persistent border vulnerabilities. He expressed concern over gaps in coordination between the BSF and Assam Police and warned that state-level pushbacks without proper Foreigners Tribunal processes may create legal ambiguities and diplomatic tensions with Bangladesh.
Calling the issue a matter of both national security and foreign policy, the Congress leader urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to review BSF deployment and strategies in the difficult border terrain. Enhance coordination protocols between central and state forces.
Introduce technology-based border surveillance and detection systems. Engage diplomatically with Bangladesh to address infiltration at the source. Establish clear guidelines and standard operating procedures for handling infiltrators. Saikia stressed that a “robust and well-coordinated approach” was vital to prevent recurring incidents and safeguard both security and bilateral relations.
