GUWAHATI: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), in association with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kamrup, the DDMA Kamrup Metro, the Assam Cycling Association, and Pedal for a Change, organized an event entitled “Cycle Rally-Stop Polluting, Start Pedaling” around Guwahati with an objective to create public awareness on climate change on the occasion of ASDMA foundation day on Thursday.
The route of the rally was from Janata Bhawan to the Veterinary Field, Khanapara, via the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati.
The cycle rally was flagged off by K V Singhdeo, IPS, Director General of Civil Defense; Dipak Sarma, Rtd. IAS and former Chief Executive Officer of ASDMA; and Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, IAS and Chief Executive Officer of ASDMA. K. V. Singhdeo congratulated ASDMA on its Foundation Day and appreciated it for conducting the rally, which aimed to spread awareness among people regarding cycling, which helps to develop climate resilience.
Dipak Sarma expressed his gratitude to ASDMA for creating awareness through cycling, which would inform people about healthy living and reduce air pollution. Gyanendra Dev Tripathi mentioned during his address that ASDMA intends to celebrate its foundation day every year by involving the general public in different activities with the aim of creating mass awareness of disaster management. This year, focusing on the theme of G20 and disaster risk reduction, the cycle rally was organized to ignite people on the importance of cycling towards a clean and green environment.
On the occasion of Foundation Day, ASDMA also conducted an essay competition among the students on various topics of disaster preparedness. The winners were awarded and felicitated at the end of the rally.
