GUWAHATI: Assam Commerce and Industries Minister Bimal Borah said that Assam would emerge as a global semiconductor hub in the days ahead.
The Assam Semiconductor Conclave 2024 was held at Kar Bhawan on Friday. The conclave aimed to showcase Assam's potential as a semiconductor hub, attract global and domestic investments, and highlight the benefits of a robust semiconductor supply chain for job creation, R&D, and reducing import dependence.
Speaking as the chief guest at the conclave, minister Bimal Borah emphasised the semiconductor industry's crucial role in India's technological sovereignty and economic resilience. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to make India a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing through the "Semicon India Programme" launched in December 2021.
Assam's emerging role as a centre of innovation and investment was underscored by Borah, citing over Rs. 13,000 crore in investments and the landmark Rs. 27,000 crore semiconductor facilities by Tata Group. The state is poised for accelerated industrial growth, with the conclave's focus on semiconductor technology being a step forward in realising the vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat) and a developed Assam (Viksit Asom).
Additional Secretary Dr. P. Uday Praveen, Tata's project head Ashish Mishra, and Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota spoke on the occasion, along with policymakers and experts, to explore advancements and opportunities in the sector, stated a press release.
