GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice N. Unni Krishnan Nair disposed of the contempt case-C 146/2025 as the respondent, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (V&AC), Assam told the court that preliminary enquiries had been instituted against the erring offices of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department (P&RD) regarding the irregularities in the MGNREGA and IAY and other schemes in Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, and Golaghat districts.
The petitioner, Amguri Naba Sirman Samity, filed the contempt petition (146/2025) alleging non-compliance with the high court’s order issued on December 14, 2021, in the PIL (19/2021). In its order in the PIL, the high court had expressed its opinion that the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, should immediately initiate a regular inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the implementation of MGNREGA, IAY and other schemes in the aforesaid upper Assam districts.
“Since the state government has already taken necessary steps for enquiring into the matter, we are of the opinion that perhaps the matter may be closed with the observation and direction that the authority concerned will conclude the enquiry as early as possible, preferably within a period of six months, and take necessary consequential action as per law,” the high court said in its earlier order.
