Assam: Vigilance sleuths arrest BDO of Hojai District in bribery charges

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption arrested a government official on bribery charges.

GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption arrested a government official on bribery charges. The accused is identified as Sewali Chakravorty, Block Development Officer of Binakandi Development Block of Hojai District. Sewali had demanded Rs 2 lakh as a bribe from the complainant for releasing payments for works completed by the complainant's brother.

According to sources, a team of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption laid a trap against Sewali Chakravorty on Sunday. The BDO of Binakandi Block was caught red-handed in the presence of independent witnesses, immediately after she accepted Rs. 10,000 as part of the demanded bribe in her car on the National Highway at Niz Kathiatoli, in Nagaon district, from the complainant. The complainant approached the directorate V & AC unwilling to pay the bribe for taking necessary legal action against the above-mentioned public servant.

The team seized the bribe money from her possession, and having received enough evidence, the team arrested the official.

In this connection, a case (83/2023 under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018)) has been registered in the ACB Police Station.
