GUWAHATI: The Department of School Education on Monday informed the Gauhati High Court that a web portal for providing free education to children from economically weaker sections of society has been made operational from December 13, within the deadline of December 15 earlier given by the HC for making the portal operational.
According to R. Mazumdar, the counsel for the Department of School Education, all the inspectors of schools/District Elementary Education Officers (DEEOs) have been directed to ensure the registration of schools in their respective districts in the portal. This move is part of the effective implementation of Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act, 2009, he stated.
The division bench comprising Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Kaushik Goswami was conducting a hearing in a public interest litigation case (PIL/30/2023) filed by We For Guwahati Foundation and two others regarding the admission of students in un-aided and non-minority schools in Assam, as prescribed in Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
Mazumdar placed on record a communication dated December 13 from the Joint Secretary of the Government of Assam, Department of School Education. The Gauhati High Court had earlier expressed its displeasure at the state Department of School Education for not making the web portal operational despite earlier orders and promises. The court had given the department a “last opportunity” to make the portal operational by December 15.
