Guwahati: Renowned writer and international Bhaona artiste Arup Saikia was felicitated on Saturday by the Assamese Wikipedia Society during a dignified ceremony held at a private hotel in Guwahati. The event witnessed the presence of eminent Assamese writers who have contributed to enriching Assamese Wikipedia through literary works and Unicode-based creations.

Speaking at the ceremony, members of the society highlighted that despite Assamese being recognized as a Dhrupadi (classical) language, its online presence remains limited. The society is actively working to make the language more software-friendly through popular writings and literature.

A senior literary figure, Arup Saikia has significantly contributed to Assamese Wikipedia by uploading two of his poetry books, Silpi Satta and Sabda, on Wikipedia and Wikisource. Both collections feature poems that delve into socio-political issues of the state and the nation. Known for his powerful recitations, Saikia enthralled the audience by performing his revolutionary poem ‘Moi Ejon Kobi’ during the event.

The dignitaries present at the occasion urged Saikia to continue his literary journey and inspire budding writers to serve Assamese literature and language. Apart from his digital contributions, Saikia has published several acclaimed books, including ‘Bhaona and Assamese Society,’ ‘Sankardeva: The Social Scientist,’ and ‘Sankardeva: Samaj Vijnanar Chintanayak.’
