Guwahati: In a landmark achievement for the Assamese language and indigenous identity, Hirak Jyoti Bora unveiled the world’s first indigenous-language Assamese translation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) at the 18th Session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples held at Palais des Nations, Room XIX, Geneva.
The translated document was formally handed over to the Director of UNESCO, marking a momentous global recognition of Assam’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage. This pioneering effort was undertaken through the collaboration of Touch of Humanity NGO and the World Barua Organization, the latter enjoying special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The Assamese version of UNDRIP is slated for a formal launch at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, further cementing Assam’s presence in international dialogues on indigenous rights and cultural preservation.
“This is more than a translation—it’s the voice of our soul, our identity, and our beloved mother tongue reaching the global stage,” said Hirak Jyoti Bora, expressing heartfelt pride and emotion.
The team behind this initiative has extended special thanks to Assam’s Education Minister, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, for his support and encouragement in achieving this cultural milestone. The initiative has been widely lauded as a significant step in promoting linguistic diversity, indigenous recognition, and cultural diplomacy.
