GUWAHATI: The Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim is going to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee with a variety of programmes on the September 10 and September 11 at the Pragjyotish ITA Centre at Machkhowa here.
Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju will be the Chief Guest in the inaugural session of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, stated a press release.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Supreme Court judges Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Justice Arup Kumar Goswami, Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, Chief Justice the Telangana High Court, Justice RM Chhaya, Chief Justice the Gauhati High Court and Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India will be the Guests of Honour.
Apurba Kumar Sarma, Executive Chairman, Bar Council of India and Gajanand Sahewalla, Chairman of Bar Council of Assam, will also grace the inaugural ceremony along with the Vice Chairman and other Members of the Bar Council of India. The Chairman and Members of Bar Councils of different States of India, former and sitting judges of the Gauhati High Court, members of the district judiciary, advocates from different Bar Associations of the five constituent States, officers of the State Governments and police departments, Vice Chancellors of National Law University, Gauhati University, Royal Global University, principals, faculty members and students of law colleges and many other prominent lawyers and dignitaries will attend the function.
To commemorate the occasion, two national seminars on contemporary legal topics would be held. On September 10, the seminar topic would be 'Role of Technology in the Legal Sector and in Facilitating Speedy Justice' and it would be presided over by Justice Surya Kant. Justice Suman Shyam, Judge of the Gauhati High Court, Prof (Dr) Ranbir Singh, founder Vice Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi and Governing Council Member, IFIM Law School and Prof (Dr) VC Vivekanandan, Vice Chancellor of Hidayatullah Law Institute University, Raipur, Chhattisgarh would be distinguished speakers on the topic. The second seminar on September 11 will be on the topic of 'The Challenges to the Rule of Law and Democracy in India', where lectures will be delivered by Tushar Mehta, Solicitor General of India, Prof C Raj Kumar, founder Vice Chancellor, OP Jindal Global University & Dean, Jindal Global Law School, Vikas Singh, senior advocate and president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and Jaibhave Jayant Dattaray, Member, Bar Council of India from Maharashtra.
It may be mentioned that the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim is the biggest State Bar Council in India so far as jurisdiction is concerned. It is the apex body for advocates of the 5 constituent States.
