Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Wednesday lodged a complaint before the Election Commission of India stating that there has been a blatant misuse of Model Code of Conduct by the BJP leaders during the 1st phase of elections in the State of Assam and therefore sought for ECI's intervention in connection to the matter.
On behalf of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Diganta Chaudhury General Secretary, APCC filed a complaint before the Election Commission of India.
The complaint letter reads, "5 HPC seats are going to polls on April 11 and we have received some very alarming reports from different parts of those areas since yesterday evening that BJP leaders including Minister's, MLA's, MP's, elected PRI representatives and District level office bearers are openly distributing huge caches of cash money and liquor among the voters especially those residing in the backward areas, Tea Gardens and habitats of tribals and backward classes. Several such attempts were apprehended by vigilant Congress workers and immediately reported to the respective District administration. Though specific such incidents were reported to the district administration of Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat, but no concrete steps have been initiated against the offenders and rather the cases have been diluted and the offenders let off thus vitiating the conduct of a free & fair poll here."
APCC further alleged that the District & Police administration has buckled down to the dictates of the ruling dispensation of the State by allowing & abetting such illegal activities consequently adversely affecting your attempts to conduct a free & fair poll.
"Going by the yesterday activities, we apprehend that similar attempts will be made by the BJP leaders in different parts of the areas going to poll tomorrow. We solicit your express intervention into the matter and further request you to send strong instructions to the State Election machinery to not only be vigilant but also take exemplary action against such offenders as per provisions of law," APCC claimed further.
