GUWAHATI: According to Nripen Malakar, secretary of the Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam, the Assam government’s budget for 2025-26 has neglected the welfare of persons with disabilities (PwDs). The budget, presented on March 10, 2025, does not include provisions for pensions, education, or employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
“We had demanded that the government provide a pension of Rs 1,563 to people with disabilities, but this has not been included in the budget,” Malakar said. Malakar also pointed out that the budget has not made any provisions for the education of people with disabilities. “The only school for the visually impaired in Guwahati has not been granted government aid, and there is no mention of this in the budget,” he said. The organization had also demanded that the government fill up the backlog of vacancies reserved for person with disabilities, but this has not been addressed in the budget.
Malakar alleged that the budget is a “vote-centric” budget, aimed at appeasing voters ahead of the upcoming elections.
