GUWAHATI: With elections to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) looming on the horizon, many residents of the city have expressed mixed feelings about the efficacy of electing their representatives to the civic body.

The number of wards under the GMC has increased to 60 this time from the earlier 30, but the nature of chronic problems plaguing the city remains the same. These problems include water-logging, drain blockage and shortage of potable water.

For instance, inhabitants of Ward No. 36 (Rajgarh, Pub-Sarania, South-Sarania, Lachit Nagar, Islampur and Gandhibasti areas) face the twin problems of water-logging during rains and shortage of potable water. Inhabitants of Ward No. 27 (RG Baruah Road and Rajgarh Link Road areas) and Ward No. 38 (Anil Nagar and Nabin Nagar) face the same problems.

A student residing in a hostel in the Rajghar area said that the water-logging problem in the area is an old one, yet no solution has been found yet by the GMC. "People come asking for votes at the time of elections, but after the results are declared the ward members etc., are rarely to be seen." Many residents of the city feel that those who are elected to the GMC this time should strive to resolves the long-pending problems of the city's inhabitants.
