GUWAHATI: Today was the first Sunday of the New Year, picnickers made a beeline for various picnic spots in and around the city. The only unusual development today was that the city police, Excise Department and Transport Department personnel visited most of the crowded spots and carried out checks to ascertain whether the designated drivers among the picnickers were drinking alcohol.

One police official involved in the checking said, "We do not have any problem with people enjoying their drink during picnics, but we do have a problem if the person who will be driving them back home is drinking alcohol."

He added, "Many people will criticize us, but what we are doing is for their own benefit and safety."

Excise Department and Transport Department officials also echoed the police official. They said that many of the picnic groups included children and, at least for their sakes, the picnickers should heed the appeal for restraint made by the Chief Minister.
