GUWAHATI: The Cotton University (CU) authorities have debarred one student from taking admission in the post-graduate or any other course of the university and imposed fines of varying amounts on several other students for their involvement in the violent confrontation between boarders of the Surendra Nath Brahma Choudhury (SNBC) and Mahendra Nath Deka Phukan (MNDP) boys' hostels on January 5.
According to a Notice issued by the Registrar of the university, the action has been taken on the basis of a report submitted by the 'high-powered hostel committee' which was set up to look into the incident.
The Notice further stated that the Superintendents of both the hostels would be "relieved of their term with effect from March 31" and that the Director of Students' Welfare will be in charge of both hostels till new Superintendents are appointed.
While virtually expelling one Kailash Doley "for his involvement in life threatening attack on the boarders of MNDP hostel," the university authorities also imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 upon him.
Two other students, Parvez Ali and Gunin Pegu (both boarders of SNBC hostel) have been slapped with fines of Rs 7,000 each "for violent activity."
Another student, Nayan Jyoti Kalita, has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 6,000 "for staying in MNDP hostel without admission and pretending himself to be the leader of the boarders of the MNDP hostel and behaving rudely with Superintendent of SNBS hostel."
Moreover, the university authorities have imposed fines of Rs 2,500 each on all boarders of both the hostels involved in the incident. However, boarders with physical disabilities have been exempted from paying the fines.
All fines will have to be paid within March 31, the Notice stated.
The Notice goes on to state: "Henceforth, any university student found guilty of being involved in such heinous acts by any committee, police or any other authority shall be deemed to have forfeited their seat with immediate effect. Such students shall be barred from admission in any course of the university.
Henceforth, in case of occurrence of any such incident, the concerned hostels shall be sealed with immediate effect and boarders will be re-allocated till such time deemed appropriate by the University authority."
