GUWAHATI: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) staged a protest at the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway headquarter in Maligoan on Wednesday over the leasing out of Railway land to private organizations in Guwahati. The CPM said that the Railways has earmarked two plots of land in Guwahati, amounting roughly to 58 bighas, for leasing out to three businessmen. Two plots of land, one measuring 40 bighas at the junction of GNB Road and Ananda Ram Baruah Road in Panbazar, and another plot measuring 18 bighas near Ambari, have been leased out for 99 years to the Guwahati-based businessmen. Members of the State Committee of CPM have submitted a memorandum to the Centre regarding the issue, condemning the action of the Railways. The memorandum stated: "CPIM registered its protest against such privatization and leasing out and handing over of public properties to private people."
