GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said that he has asked each and every police station in the State to crack down on drug peddlers to root them out or else they will spoil the generation next in society.

Sonowal was speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the newly reconstructed Basistha police station here on Saturday. Sonowal rued the fact that thieves took away property of flood-affected people staying on relief camps. He has asked the police personnel to intensify their patrolling to protect the property of flood-hit people.

Speaking at the same function, Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said: “The Chief Minister has asked us to be tough on drug peddlers in the State. We’ve started a mass awareness programme by taking citizens’ bodies, women organizations and village defence parties (VDPs) in Guwahati against drugs. We need to nullify the demand of drugs in society.”

Substance abuse is a major cause of concern among the youth all over and the alarming rate at which it is escalating has raised red flags. Drug addicts and peddlers have found ways to continue rampantly right under the noses of authorities in spite of the efforts put up to curb this addiction that is slowly destroying nations.
