GUWAHATI: Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia on Monday submitted a letter to the Assam Director General of Police (DGP), demanding a probe into illicit timber smuggling.
In the letter, Saikia said that for the past one year, illegal timber from Arunachal Pradesh is being smuggled to the bordering areas in Assam’s Tinsukia district. From here, the timber is further smuggled to different parts of the State as well as various parts of the country. He said that the media has been highlighting this illegal timber trade. Saikia urged the Assam DGP to initiate a probe into the smuggling of illegal timber and to take steps to check this illicit trade.
